Answers to Questions

1. How do I backup data and setups generated by ICS?

In its default configuration, Metrics ICS saves all setup files within the Data directory which is found within the ICS directory. This Data directory structure must be preserved. To backup files, make a copy of the Data directory. If using compression software make sure that any features to preserve directory structure are selected.

2. How do I transfer data and setups between two different computers using ICS?

Metrics ICS can export project files to disk as well as import project files. This allows one to create projects on one system and transfer them to other systems. Please note that since the setups are tied to the instrumentation you are using you must verify that all drivers used in the project file are present on the system you are going to import the project onto. Also note that the version of the Metrics ICS software must be the same on both machines. If these two requirements are met, then transferring project files is merely a matter of exporting a project file and then importing it. To export a file, load it as the active file and then choose File|Export. Choose the name of the file keeping the .DAT extension and select the Export As Project Binary button. Choose OK and the file will export. To import a file choose File|Import and select the file. The imported file is not saved into the local database until the user performs a Save or Save As.

3. Can ICS be used with other data acquisition software (i.e. Labview, Visual Basic)?

Metrics ICS will run concurrently with other data acquisition products. ICS can act as a measurement engine, providing access to measurements from predefined ICS setups. Other software products can send DDE commands to Metrics ICS to load a file, perform measurements, and return data. This makes it convenient to integrate ICS into a larger software data acquisition system without having to write all of the instrument specific control.

4. How can I combine data from external programs with my ICS data?

Importing data into the Metrics ICS program is not supported. The data is very closely linked to the measurement setup information. To combine the data, it must be exported and then combined. Alternatively if the data is need by the other program during run-time, use the DDE capability to retrieve the data out of ICS.

5. Can Metrics ICS transfer measured data to other Windows software?

Transfer of data to other programs can be accomplished in three ways. (1) You may use the Windows Clipboard to Copy/Paste selected data from the Metrics ICS Data View window to another program. (2) You can set up a dynamic link ("hot link") through DDE to another Windows application such as Microsoft Excel. (3) You may export data to ASCII files for import into external analysis packages or other data acquisition software that support columnar formatted data.

6. Does Metrics ICS support RS-232 instruments?

Metrics ICS does not currently support any instruments that use the RS-232. The communications server can be extended to provide access to RS-232 interface if needed.
