Answers to Questions 1. What is the current version of Metrics ICS? The current version is 3.6.0. 2. In previous versions of Metrics ICS there was a probing interface. What happened to it? In order to provide a more flexible software package to meet the increasing demands of our customers Metrics Technology has created a new software product named I/CV. Metrics I/CV provides significantly more flexible test design and probing control than the old ICS method. Please refer to the I/CV Information page. 3. Can Metrics ICS 3.6.0 be installed on a computer running Metrics ICS 3.3, 3.4, or 3.5? Metrics ICS can be installed on a computer previously running Metrics 3.3, 3.4, or 3.5. Metrics ICS project files are upward compatible with Metrics ICS 3.6.0. The user should not try to run older versions of Metrics ICS and the new Metrics ICS 3.6.0 at the same time because both programs use commonly named dynamic link libraries that can confuse the Windows dynamic library loader. It is recommended that Metrics ICS be installed in the default directory. 4. How much disk space is required to install Metrics ICS? The Metrics ICS program files require approximately 10 Mbytes of hard disk space. You should plan to have additional space for measured data files. ICS project files including 10 different measurement setups and data average 10K per file created. Testing 100 devices will require 1 Mbyte of disk space. 5. What if I already have a previous copy of Metrics ICS? You should install your new version of ICS over the previous copy. You database will be preserved in the ICS/DATA directory. The ICS.INI file will also be preserved which include instrument configuration information and user preferences. For version 3.6 your original ICS.INI file will be preserved and copied into a ICS35.INI file. 6. How do I install additional driver libraries to my system? All drivers are automatically installed with the ICS v3.6.0 software. Driver files are installed in the ICS/DRIVERS directory. 7. Can Metrics ICS be installed on the network? Metrics ICS's security scheme assumes that the software will be installed on a single PC that is attached to the instrumentation. The security key must be installed on an LPT: port of the computer running the software. The installation can be done from the network but each computer running ICS must have a security key installed as well as the codeword entered. 8. Can I install ICS without first installing the GPIB software for my IEEE-488 card? There is no requirement to install the GPIB software first, however you must have the software installed before attempting to poll an instrument or make measurements. Metrics ICS requires the GPIB software to access low-level commands of the IEEE-488 interface card. 9. Can I install Metrics ICS on a different drive letter than C:\? Metrics ICS can be installed on any local drive letter. If you are installing an upgrade to a previous version it is recommended the you install the software in the same directory as the previous version. 10. How do I install the Security Key if I have a local printer? The security key is designed to pass through all signals used by the printer. Remove the printer cable from the LPT: port and install the security key in its place. Attach the printer cable to the security key.
11. Does the ICS installation modify any of my system files? Metrics ICS installation does not modify any DOS or Windows system file. It creates a file named ICS35.INI in the \ICS directory and uses this file exclusively. 12. Why is the ICS35.INI file created during installation? The ICS.INI file contains information that the executable program uses to determine where the instrument drivers and switch program are located. These locations are stored in the ICS35.INI file as options are installed. The ICS35.INI also contains instrument configuration information and user environment preferences. 13. Are there any example data files installed on the system? Several example data files are included in the \ICS directory. These files contain setups for Bipolar and MOS technologies. The files are instrument specific and are named accordingly (i.e. MOS4155-6.DAT). Simply import the data file and you now have a working example. 14. How do I install my switch matrix drivers in Metrics ICS? The installation program has an button to install the Metrics Switch program and the included drivers for switch matrix hardware. Select the button to install Switch.
